The Recession Was A Good Thing

After coming out a particularly tumultuous presidential administration, hopes were down.  Cherry on top?  Entering a deep, dark, scary, recession.  However, haven’t heard much about the bugger in a while.  People seem to be done complaining about the recession (or at least I hope).

In recessions, people love to talk ABOUT the recession – the deep, dark, mucky, yucky, icky recession.  Then there are those that played a little business arbitrage who made rocks into diamonds.  People like that realized the beauty of dire situations – that when you’re in them, the only place to go is UP UP UP.

So why was the recession a good thing?

Not only was it a good thing, it was a blessing.  It was what the economy needed.  It’s what entrepreneur’s needed – a KICK IN THE BUTT.

Specifically, the recession was good for:

•    Community.  If nothing else, the country was brought together.  Albeit to bitch and moan about the recession, but we were brought  together.  There is something to be said for solidarity during that time.
•    Morale.  How could we not be hopeful and optimistic during the recession?  The recession caused a sense of necessary rejuvenation.
•    Innovation.  Out with the old rules.  In with innovation and creativity.  The recession made us question the current policies, practices, and methods used in business.
•    The Underdog.  The people least likely to succeed are able to in a recession.  Why?  Because the odds are not against them, as they are against everyone.  Also, they have nothing to lose.

What’s your opinion?  Tell me if I’m nuts.

there's also lots of companies giving away fun things away for free ;)
  • True true. Gotta love those Recession Specials!
  • There's positives and negatives to everything!

There are definitely a lot of positives to the recession and I'm glad you wrote this post... people do need to see the upside and be optimistic if they don't want the recession to affect them negatively.

The recession isn't over yet though in my opinion... I think that it's going to be a few years before it's over for sure.
  • I don't pretend to debate about the economy or know enough to make educated guessed about that state of recession, but I do know that there are a million ways to look at every situation! In this case, one was optimism.

In the blogging and eCommerce community, I do like how optimistic entrepreneurs were/are. We were so inundated with the constant doom and gloom coming from the media, it was a breath of fresh air to hear how well other were doing considering all things.
  • Carla, good point. I tend to think that the media actively portrayed the rescession as scary. Luckily though, entrepreneurs (and smart companies) realized that despite all this, there were still pockets of success to be had.

What's your take on the 'survival of the fittest' approach? Like the recession is good because it gets rid of the bad businesses/business people and only the strong survive. I guess that would be except for government bailout, but I think you know what I mean. I love the concept. It would be great if more people could look at the positives of it.
  • How come I didn't think of that? Of course, survival of the fittest is a perfect explanation for the positives of the recession. Right on evolutionofwealth!
